Mums to be turn their baby bumps into art on canvas
Song bird Mariah Carey started the trend for mums-to-be to turn their baby bumps into a piece of art on canvas. It seems that other women living in New York are now following suite and are hiring artists to create some art on their bellies too.
A yoga teacher had the word ‘Om’, along with some brightly coloured abstract artwork painted across her stomach while eight months pregnant at her baby shower, while another woman had a butterfly painted onto hers at the beginning of her ninth month. The women then both took some photos to remember their unique, pre-baby bodies.
The trend for painted bellies originated around five years ago, when pregnant women wanted an original keepsake of their pregnancy requested the services of face and body painters. These women were looking for an alternative than to follow in the footsteps of Demi Moore, who famously bared her naked pregnant body in an artistic way on the cover of Vanity Fair.
Most women use the temporary paint as a way of celebrating their baby bump, and showcasing their un-born baby’s heritage, as well as their hopes and aspirations for their un-born child. For others, it’s a way of liberating themselves at a time when they are feeling self conscious about their changing body shape.
